About the locality

Geographical position

The locality of Cârțăeni is part of the Căușeni district and is located in the eastern part of the Căușeni district, at a distance of 8 km and 5 km from the Căușeni railway station. The length of the locality's area from north to south is 15 km, from east to west 10 km. The village is located on the national route R-30.1 Chișinău–Căușeni–Ștefan Vodă–Palanca. The distance from the Palanca customs point is 70 km, and the distance from the Odesa shopping center is 125 km.

The territory of the village of Cîrnăţeni is characterized by a relief of flat heights, which descend through slopes towards the Botna River meadow. Climatic changes depend on the directions from which air currents enter: currents from the south bring rain, while those from the northeast bring a drop in temperature. In the past, the highlands of the village were occupied by forests and fruit trees, while the Botna River meadow was flooded, favoring the growth of reeds and rushes. Having such flora and fauna, the locals engaged in fishing and cattle breeding. The village of Cîrnăţeni was formed in 1651, and through it passed the road that connected the south of the country with the markets of the center, Căuşeni, Tighina, etc. Those who came from far away found a suitable place to rest for the night, where there was enough fodder for the cattle, and under the edges of the forest, they could shelter from the wind and rain. Because the native population was engaged in cattle breeding, dishes were more often prepared from meat, especially sausages, from which the name of the locality, Cîrnăţeni, later originated. Over time, as more inhabitants settled, partial deforestation of the lands began, along with the cultivation of cereals.

The Legend

“Once, a great merchant from Tighina stopped for a rest here. Other merchants and travelers also stopped and expressed their wish that it would be good if there were a tavern or a relay station in these lands; travelers could rest and have a meal at the stop. The great merchant from Tighina, hearing this, ordered the construction of a shop-relay. Travelers would stop, rest, and eat in the village's surroundings. Various types of very tasty sausages were prepared here. Their fame spread quickly throughout this region. It was from these delicious sausages that the name of the village, Cârnațeni, originated.” The village had five windmills and a wooden church dedicated to Saints Archangels Michael and Gabriel, whose feast is still celebrated every year on November 21.
